My Corner, My Blog, My Brag Rights

It has been a full year since my son graduated from high school, with honors, and set out for the challenges of university academia. Nearing the close of his first year he has finished with more than the required units in general education and maintained a 4.0 GPA. I am not only proud, but amazed at his growth and maturity.

He has been a member of the University Jazz Singers since the first quarter on campus, became a member of one of the highly regarded Fraternities on campus, and ran for an ASI office representing the Business School and won.

Very few enter college knowing exactly what their plans are, for they are all subject to change. The first 2 years are general education for a reason, to broaden the view of the world through intellectual stimulation and garner enough information to begin to formulate life course decisions. It is a fertile place to gain knowledge and understanding about society ( Sociology 101), to interact and form intelligent dialect ( Speech), to understand the world of politics and how we function as a nation (Poli Sci 110) and the list goes on into the Natural Sciences, Humanities, and the world of Art.

The challenges that our young people face as they enter a workforce that has shifted, dashed dreams and faced difficulties over the past few years is evidence of the need to take the time to prepare thoughtfully. The first two years of college help make that transition through knowledge, social outlets, and presenting opportunities through foreign and national exchange programs.

I'm deeply proud of my son's ability to not only step up to the challenge, but I admire his ability to challenge himself and face his fears. I am deeply proud of this young man.
